PRP The liquid gold everyone is talking about!

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a natural and effective treatment for facial rejuvenation and is a very popular treatment here at NVA. This innovative therapy uses the patient's own blood to stimulate collagen production, increase elasticity, and improve overall skin quality. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of PRP for facial rejuvenation and why our Patients are raving about their skin after PRP.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, which is a concentration of platelets and growth factors derived from the patient's own blood. Platelets are a type of blood cell that play a critical role in the body's healing response. They contain growth factors, cytokines, and other proteins that help to stimulate tissue regeneration and repair.

PRP has been used for a variety of medical and cosmetic purposes, including wound healing, tissue regeneration, hair restoration and facial rejuvenation. When applied to the skin, PRP stimulates collagen production, which can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How does PRP work for facial rejuvenation?

When PRP is used for facial rejuvenation, the enriched plasma is injected into the patient's face using a fine needle. The growth factors and platelets in the plasma stimulate collagen production, which helps to increase the skin's thickness and elasticity. The result is smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

What does PRP treatment involve?

Consultation: The first step in PRP treatment for facial rejuvenation is to consult with our Nurse who will evaluate your skin and discuss your goals for the treatment. We will also review your medical history and any medications you are taking to ensure that you are a good candidate for the treatment.

Blood draw: Once you are deemed a suitable candidate for PRP facial rejuvenation, our nurse will draw a small amount of blood from your arm. The blood is then placed into a special machine called a centrifuge, which spins the blood to separate the platelets and growth factors from the rest of the blood.

Preparation of PRP: The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then separated from the platelet poor plasma (PPP).

Application of PRP: A compounded numbing gel is applied to the areas of the face being treated. The PRP is then applied to the face using a series of injections to target the specific areas of concern.

Combining PRP with skin needling is a popular treatment for facial rejuvenation and an add on that we strongly recommend. Skin needling involves using a device called a Dermapen 4 with contains a cartridge of 16 tiny needles which oscillate quickly at varying depths to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body's natural healing response and promotes collagen production. When PRP is added to the treatment, it can enhance the benefits of skin needling and provide even more dramatic results. Here are some of the benefits of PRP with skin needling:

Improved collagen production: PRP contains growth factors that can help stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that gives the skin its strength and elasticity. When combined with skin needling, which also stimulates collagen production, the treatment can significantly improve the texture and tone of the skin.

Increased skin thickness: Collagen is not only responsible for skin strength and elasticity, but it also contributes to the overall thickness of the skin. PRP can help thicken the skin, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Reduced scarring: The micro-injuries created by skin needling can also help reduce the appearance of scars. PRP can enhance this effect by promoting the growth of new tissue and reducing inflammation.

Non-invasive: PRP with skin needling is a non-invasive treatment that requires no downtime. Patients may experience some redness and mild swelling immediately following the treatment, but this typically resolves within a day or two.

Natural: PRP is a natural treatment that uses the patient's own blood, which means there is no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.

Long-lasting results: The results of PRP with skin needling can last for several months to a year, depending on the individual and the extent of the treatment.

Post-treatment Instructions

To maximise the healing benefits from your PRP therapy we strongly recommend:

  •  Do not apply makeup for at least 24hrs.
  •  Do not wash you face for 4 hours post treatment (warm water no soap)
  •   No anti-inflammatory medication (e.g., Nurofen) or oral steroids (e.g.: Prednisone for 7 days post treatment.
  •   Minimal alcohol, coffee, caffeine, and nil supplements that may increase bruising for 2 days post treatment.
  • No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

PRP treatment for facial rejuvenation may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the extent of the treatment. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately following the treatment, although some mild redness and swelling may occur for a few days after the procedure. We recommend 3 treatments 4 weeks apart to achieve the desired results.

Is PRP treatment safe?

PRP injections are generally considered safe when performed by a qualified healthcare professional. Since PRP is derived from the patient's own blood, there is little risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.

However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects associated with PRP injections. Some of these may include:

Pain or discomfort at the injection site: PRP injections may cause mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the injection site. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

Infection: As with any injection, there is a small risk of infection at the injection site. At NVA we take precautions to minimize this risk by using sterile techniques and equipment.

Bleeding or bruising: PRP injections may cause minor bleeding or bruising at the injection site. This is usually temporary and resolves within a few days.

Overall, PRP injections are considered safe for most patients. However, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the treatment with a qualified healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.

Is PRP right for you?

PRP is a safe and effective treatment for facial rejuvenation, but it may not be suitable for everyone. If you have a bleeding disorder, a low platelet count, or are taking blood thinners, PRP may not be appropriate for you. Additionally, if you have an active infection or skin condition, you may need to postpone treatment until it has resolved.

To determine if PRP is right for you, it is important to schedule a consultation with us in clinic.

When choosing a healthcare provider for PRP facial rejuvenation, it is important to do your research and select a qualified and experienced provider Look for a medical professional who has a proven track record of performing PRP facial rejuvenation safely and effectively, and who are licensed by AHPRA. Don't be afraid to ask questions and discuss your concerns with the provider before undergoing any injectable procedure.

To sum up……

PRP is a natural and effective treatment for facial rejuvenation that uses the patient's own blood to stimulate collagen production and improve skin quality. We have seen amazing results with our Patients from this treatment and cannot recommend it enough.
