The Lip Filler Lowdown..... All of your questions answered.

Vicki McKenna • Mar 24, 2023

Lip filler has become increasingly popular in recent years. This procedure involves injecting dermal filler into the lips to enhance their shape, size, and overall appearance. While there are many reasons why someone may choose to get lip filler, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the before deciding to go ahead with the treatment.

What is lip filler?

Lip fillers are a type of cosmetic injectable used to add volume and shape to the lips. They typically contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that helps to keep skin plump and hydrated. When injected into the lips, hyaluronic acid fillers can add volume and enhance the natural shape of the lips, making them appear fuller and more defined. Hyaluronic acid fillers are preferred because they are safe, temporary, and can be easily dissolved if needed.

Are Lip Fillers Permanent?

No, lip fillers are not permanent. They are a temporary cosmetic treatment that typically lasts anywhere from six months to a year, depending on the type of filler used and the individual's metabolism. Over time, the hyaluronic acid in the filler is gradually broken down by the body and absorbed, causing the lips to gradually return to their pre-treatment size and shape.

How does the procedure work?

The lip filler procedure is relatively simple and can be completed in under an hour. Before the treatment, a topical numbing gel is applied to the lips to minimize discomfort. The filler we use for the lips also contains a numbing agent to further minimize any pain. The filler is then injected into the lips using a small needle. The filler is slowly injected using various techniques depending on the patient and the desired outcome. The process is relatively painless, and most patients report only mild discomfort.

What Lip Filler should I get?

There are several brands of lip fillers available on the market, and the "best" one for you will depend on your individual goals, preferences, and the advice of a Our Nurse Injector. We perform a full facial assessment before any treatments to ensure harmonisation of all facial features and take this into account when deciding what products and techniques would be best for each individual Patient. It is never a one fits all process.

How much Lip Filler will I need?

The amount of lip filler that you will need depends on several factors, including your individual goals, the current size and shape of your lips. During your initial consultation, our Nurse Injector will assess your lips and discuss your goals to determine the appropriate amount of filler to achieve the desired result.

It's important to keep in mind that while adding more filler can enhance the appearance of the lips, over-injection can result in an unnatural or disproportionate look. It's always best to start with a conservative amount and gradually add more as needed to achieve the desired result.

Ultimately, the best way to determine the appropriate amount of lip filler for your specific needs is to schedule a consultation with Nurse Vicki who can assess your lips and recommend a customized treatment plan.

Will Lip Filler suit me?

Whether or not lip filler will suit you depends on several factors, including your individual goals, the current size and shape of your lips, and we also look at all your facial features to ensure harmonisation. During your initial consultation, our Nurse will assess your lips and discuss your goals to determine whether lip filler is a suitable option for you.

In general, lip filler can be a good option for people who:

1.        Want to add volume or definition to the lips

2.        Want to improve the symmetry or balance of the lips

3.        Want to smooth out wrinkles or lines around the lips

4.        Want to improve the overall appearance of the lips

However, it's important to keep in mind that lip filler is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. Our Nurse will work with you to determine the best course of treatment based on your individual needs and goals.

It's also important to have realistic expectations for the results of lip filler treatment. While it can enhance the appearance of the lips and improve facial harmony, it cannot completely change the underlying structure of the lips or create a drastically different look.

Overall, the best way to determine whether lip filler is a suitable option for you is to schedule a consultation with our Nurse who can assess your lips and recommend a customized treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals.

When does lip filler swelling go down?

Swelling is a common side effect of lip filler injections, and it typically peaks within the first 24-48 hours after treatment. The duration of swelling can vary from person to person, but in general, most people will see a noticeable reduction in swelling within the first few days following treatment.

The severity and duration of swelling can be influenced by several factors, including the type and amount of filler used, the injection technique, and the individual's metabolism and healing process. To help minimize swelling and promote healing after lip filler injections, we recommend the following:

1.        Apply ice or a cold compress to the lips for the first 24 hours after treatment to help reduce swelling.

2.        Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that increase blood flow to the face for the first 24-48 hours after treatment.

3.        Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help flush the filler out of your system.

4.        Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications, as they can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.

In general, most people will see a significant reduction in swelling within the first week following treatment. However, it's important to keep in mind that individual results may vary, and it can take up to two weeks for the full results of lip filler treatment to be visible. If you experience persistent or severe swelling, or any other concerns following lip filler injections, it's important to contact the clinic.

Are there any risks associated with lip filler?

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks associated with lip filler. The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness. In rare cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction or infection.  There is also a very small risk of a vascular occlusion which is when filler is inadvertently injected into the blood vessel. This can lead to a blockage of blood flow to the surrounding tissues, which can cause tissue damage and even necrosis (tissue death). To minimise these risks, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced injector who has extensive knowledge of the facial anatomy and knows exactly what to do should any complications arise.

How long do the results last?

The results of lip filler typically last between six to twelve months, depending on the type of filler used and the individual's metabolism. Over time, the filler will naturally break down and be absorbed by the body. If a patient wishes to maintain their results, they will need to have follow-up treatments every few months.

To Sum Up.............

In conclusion, lip filler is a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of the lips. While there are some risks associated with the treatment, these can be minimized by choosing a reputable practitioner and following proper aftercare instructions. With proper planning and care, lip filler can provide beautiful and natural-looking results that last for months.
